We're pretty much settled in and getting to know the routine and the schedule. A lovely hostess from the dining car stopped by to get our preferred dining times.....we choose 6:30 PM and just sat back and waited for our dinner announcement. When it was our time to eat we simply open the sliding door turn right walk 5 feet to the next car....we were seated with a nice couple traveling from Washington DC. We decided on the Herb Roasted Half Chicken it was served with rice and salad.....all the meals were prepared on board in the kitchen on the lower level. It was superb service and an excellent meal.
After dinner we decided to explore and take a walk to the observation deck. Well, we figured out we couldn't go backwards because car 730 didn't have a door to go to the next car so back through the dining car and on to couch. The observation deck of course was very crowed, there were a few tables and of course I was thinking if someone was lucky enough to snag one of them that is probably where they sat for the duration of their trip. Everyone traveling couch had an assigned seat but, was also able to go into the observation deck. While walking through couch I notice the seats faced one another plus people carried coolers and such and placed them under there feet. I understand that there was a snack bar in the bottom level in car 9. We never made it to the snack bar, nor back to the observation deck again. We were content in our little home away from home. Well, its getting close 8:30 PM and we should be crossing the Mississippi River somewhere around LaCrosse WI. We're getting tired.......you know what that means! time to figure out how these bed contraptions work.....I seen the porter had made up the travelers across the isle from us while we were at dinner....we should have stuck around for lessons....OK. this can't be that difficult....Paula is pulling the seat or trying to, because it sure looks like both seats are to pull out and meet in the middle.....of course I am standing out in the hallway....maybe laughing just a little bit....OH I see the problem...remember the suitcase we stuffed under the seat? Seems the seat of the bed can's slide sooooooooooooo I'm down there with all my might trying to move that 50 pound bag....got it....OK...now for the top bunk....OH, I see there is a mattress that goes on the bottom bunk all ready made up with sheets and blanket....that was easy....so now we have to figure out just how this top bunk locks into place....maybe if Paula sits on it that will do it....except there is no way to get up there....ok I'll take the top bunk......
So now that we are West of the Mississippi River and being totally dark out our window I am thinking it's time to turn in....This is going to be interesting....the rocking back and forth will have me out in a flash....
WAIT, I have to go to the bathroom. I think I forgot to mention the head is 4 doors down on the right....good thing I am small because swaying from side to side I at least didn't bounce off the walls.....One thing for sure, now that I am a seasoned train traveler I would suggest bringing a pair of flip flops to wear into the bathroom at night. It appears to me the "standers" don't have to good of an aim when the target is moving! One other thing I do have to mention....it was so small in our berth that we actually had to open our door to put our shoes on when the beds are down!
OK. Lights out! Well, they actually didn't turn the lights out or dim them but, we were able to pull our curtains on both the outside and hallway side....which was a good thing!
Good night all! Can't wait for tomorrow to come. During the night we will be heading through MN and North Dakota...so that means the good part will be right outside our windows when we awake....
